Reason for Loss | An engine caught fire on the return leg. With control becoming difficult, the aircraft was partially abandoned and crashed near the inland bombing range in Laughterton Marsh in the Parish of Fenton, between the villages of Torksey and Laughterton, Lincolnshire. The Flight Engineer remained on board with the Pilot to assist but both perished in the crash. A memorial stands on the village green dedicated to both this crash and that of Short Stirling EH940, which also crashed nearby. |
