Reason for Loss | Lancaster ME635 had just bombed the target at 25,000 feet and was turning for home when the two portside engines were hit by flak and set on fire. The Pilot, Flight Ernest Brown ordered his crew to bale out. As they were preparing to bale out a night fighter which had been attracted by the fire came in and hit the aircraft with cannon fire, and one of the shells seared across the scalp of the mid upper gunner Burnell and spit it open and he was knocked out. The next thing he knew was when he came to in the wreckage of the aircraft which had crashed on a wooded hillside. He made his way to a railway signal crossing and gave himself up. As a prisoner of war, the camp was bombed by the USAAF and he was wounded and had to have one of his lungs removed. His crew new him as Les (Lesley |
