Translation "On 21 January 1943 at 7:35 p.m., an allied bomber crashed on fire at this spot. The Lancaster MK.I W4335 PM-F was part of 103 Sqn RAF stationed at Elsham Wolds. The bomber was shot down on the way to Essen by a German night fighter that had taken off from airfield Twente. Villa Ledeboer and several houses in the area burned down. Because the two-ton blockbuster bomb that was on board did not explode, the center of Enschede escaped total destruction. The allied crew is buried at the Oosterbegraafplaats in Enschede" |
