DFM Citation, London Gazette, 12 Febraury 1943: "1294471 Sergeant Kenneth Herbert BERRY, No 103 Squadron. This airman has completed many operational missions and has invariably pressed home - his attacks with great determination. On one occasion, when attacking Kiel, his aircraft was hit and damaged by anti-aircraft fire. Despite this, Sergeant Berry displayed great persistence and bombed his objective successfully. On another occasion he displayed commendable skill and initiative during a flight to Turin. In a recent attack on Essen, Sergeant Berry pressed home his attack with great spirit although his aircraft was damaged by opposing fire. Throughout his operational career, this airman has set a fine example". |
Ken's father died of pneumonia when he was young leaving his mother, Florence, to bring him and his two brothers up. At 18 years of age, he was sent to Canada for training. He was billeted with a Canadian family, who gave him a silver St. Christopher, which he took on all his operations. It was amongst his possesions when he was shot down and now belongs to Ken Berry Jr., his nephew, who was born the year Ken Sr. died. |
His first operation was against Dusseldorf on 31 July 1942 in a Wellington. He converted to Lancasters and flew his first operation in this four-engined aircraft on 21 November 1942, to lay mines. He volunteered for a second tour because he knew the war was at a critical juncture and that the RAF were desparately short of experienced pilots. He told his brother not to expect him home again. |
His neice and her grandson visited the grave on Texel and recalls how she asked the local police for directions, who instead insisted on taking them both to the cemetery and asked all about Ken. The wreath they laid on Ken's grave read "Although I did not know you myself, your memory still lives on. You died serving your country. We salute you as you sleep. Thank you for fighting for us. Let your memory live on for ever more". |
