One of them is a four-engine bomber type Avro Lancaster Mk I. The plane has serial number R5552 AS-P2 from 166 Sqn. That evening the plane is flying its 30th mission and is therefore a veteran. Miscellaneous Information
Daniel was born Gustave Bernard (but later changed his name to Daniel), at Belleview, Manitoba on 26 August 1923. His father worked as a labourer and was born at Millbury, Massachusetts, USA and his mother at St. Damien, Quebec. He had five sisters and two brothers. B/110097 Sapper Alfred J. Bernard RCEC died of wounds in Italy on 26 August 1944 and the second, Trooper Noah Bernard was in a convalescent hospital. A third brother, Gerald had died back in 1937. He attended Sudbury School, Ontario 1928-1937. The sports he enjoyed were Skating and swimming. After leaving school he was unemployed for several months until working on a farm for Alf Guthrie of Warren, Ontario between 1938-1941. He then worked for a few months at the International Nickel Company in Sudbury, Ontario where he was a Smelter, from May-July 1942 following which he enlisted on 20 July 1942. |
After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 16 June 1943. He arrived at 3PRC on 24 June and then was at 81 OTU on 6 July 1943, 1662 CU 14 September 1943 and 166 Squadron on 20 November 1943. Sadly, one month later, Daniel lost his life, on 20 December 1943, |
Although he changed his name from Gustave to Daniel, we appears to have been known as David and both CWGC and the Bomber Command Museum of Canada memorial give his name as David. Tragically for the family, Alfred was killed on what would have been Daniel's 21st birthday. |
