Miscellaneous Information
Date of birth 07 January 1908. Margaret was expecting their fourth child, Beryl, at the time of his death. |
He is remembered on the Lancaster war memorial in the Town hall Gardens, Dalton Square, Lancaster. After his death, Margaret moved to Morecambe, Lancashire. |
On a rare period of leave, Arthur came home with his Pilot, Sgt. Leo Dargie, to visit his family shortly before they were both killed. They were unusually given the leave due to a member of their crew, Sgt. Neil Shapley, being killed on ops with another crew the week before their own loss (22 August 1943). Leo’s mother, who lost her only son, kept in touch with Margaret for many years after the war, sending parcels of wool and other items that were not rationed in Australia, but were in England. The two women never met. |
His wife Margaret recalled that it was easy to remember the aircraft markings, since AR stood for Arthur and M2 for Margaret (herself) and Mavis (Arthur’s oldest daughter). |
