Miscellaneous Information
Herbert was born on 30 November 1917 in Graysville. Manitoba. His father was a farmer who was born in Kent, England and his mother was born in Ontario. He had two brothers George Edward and Gerald William and four sisters, Clara, Jessie, Minnie and Annie. The school Herbert attended was Graysville Consolidated between 1925-1934, where he achieved grades 1 - X1, (High School Entrance). Herbert enjoyed playing baseball in his leisure time and worked on his father’s farm from 1934 until enlistment in 1942. Between November-December 1940, he served as a Private, the compulsory month with the Winnipeg Rifles, stationed at Brandon. |
After enlisting on 17 January 1942 and initial training, Herbert found himself embarking from Halifax on 21 July 1943 and arriving at 3 PRC in the U.K. on 30 July 1943. Then came 20(P) AFU 17 August 1943, and 12 OTU on 28 December 1943. The following month on 29 January 1944, Herbert sadly lost his life. |
