Miscellaneous Information
Harold was born on 20 December 1922 at Beebe, Quebec. He had a brother Homer Woodrow and another brother, Douglas Alwin who died as a baby just turned one month old. His father was a Salvation Army Officer. His schooling was in many different places: Sherbrooke, Quebec, Fargo USA, Thief River Falls, Minnesota, 1930-1939, Valley City, North Dakota 1939-1942, and Devil’s Lake. Harold’s sporting interests were basketball , tennis, boxing and swimming. He had eight years of band experience and enjoyed building model aeroplanes. He was working as a store clerk at Red Owl Inc. 1942-1942 when he enlisted on 13 October 1942. |
After training, Harold embarked from Canada on 16 June 1943 arriving at 3 PRC on 24 June 1943. That was followed by 12 OTU 6 July 1943, 1654 CU 30 September 1943 and 57 Squadron 29 January 1944. |
His nationality was in the process of being changed from Canadian to American when he enlisted. On his enlistment forms he stated his nationality as 'Canadian (applied for U.S. Citizenship)' and further stated that his parents had 'first papers' and his birth certificate was at the American Consulate in Montreal. It is uncertain whether, by the time of his death, he had achieved American Citizenship. |
