Last Operation Information
Start Date | 09-11-1942 |
End Date | 10-11-1942 |
Takeoff Station | Skellingthorpe |
Day/Night Raid | Night (3% moon) |
Operation | Hamburg |
Reason for Loss | Hit by heavy flak on the port wing tip at the point of bombing, showering the entire aircraft with flak, injuring the pilot and the navigator more seriously. The wireless operator was killed instantly. Most of the aircraft's systems were rendered u/s and due to lack of trimming control, it was flying left wing low. Landed at an airfield near Harwich (the ORB does not state which, although it has subsequently become clear from the attached photograph that it was RAF Bradwell Bay), whereupon the undercarriage collapsed and the aircraft came to a stop without further injuries. |
