Born on 28 January 1916 in Transcona, Manitoba. His father, who prec-deceased him, was born in Mortlake, England and his mother in Richmond, both in Surrey. There was another son, named Sydney. He went to Central School 1923-1933, reaching grade 9 at High School and also his achieved his Junior Matric. Overhauling automobiles was his favourite hobby and his sports interests were basketball, hockey and baseball. Bertram was a truck driver between 1934-1935 and then worked as a miner between 1935-1940. From 1940 until enlistment on 27 May 1941, he worked as a grocery clerk. He undertook a 30 day Camp Training course , 10 January - 10 February 1941, at Fort William shortly before enlisting. He lived at King Street, Sioux Outlook, Ontario and his mother lived at Central Park, Transcona, Manitoba. |
After enlistment and early training Bertram was sent to the U.K. and arrived at 3PRC on 29 March 1942, 20 OTU on 30 June 1942 and 101 Squadron 22 September 1942. He was at 12 Squadron on 22 October 1942. |
