Miscellaneous Information
Borden was born on 15 November 1916 in Toronto. He was one of eleven children consisting of three brothers Vincent Harvey, Norman Theodore and George Harry and seven sisters. George was killed on the Somme on 18 November 1916 aged just 19. Borden’s mother, Margaret, born in Toronto, died on 16 April 1938. His father was born in Birmingham and was a painter/decorator and was also on the Board of Education. Borden attended Leslie Street Public School, Toronto 1923-1930 (Entrance) Riverdale Collegiate Institute 1930-1934,( three years High School) Earle Grey, Toronto 1934-1936 (two years Commercial) and Eastern Commerce 1935-1937 (nights), Commercial. He worked as a Customs Clerk for McCall Corporation in York Street, Toronto 1935- 1942 after starting there as a messenger and working his way up. |
He enlisted on 16 April 1943. |
His father served overseas in the First World War and was badly injured. Borden was born whilst he was there in 1916 and so named him after the last two camps he was in: Camp Borden and Camp Bramshott. His elder son George was killed three days after Borden was born. After Borden’s mother died in 1938 he spent the next six years with a Foster. Mother, Mrs Rose Day who lived in Gainsborough Road, Toronto. |
