Reason for Loss | Attacked by a night-fighter while in the rear gunner position. Killed by a cannon shell to the head. All the aileron controls were severed and evading action could not be taken as the fighter closed in for an attack. Despite this, P/O Cochrane- the mid-upper gunner- withheld his fire until the attacker came to close range. Then, with a well placed burst of fire, he shot the enemy aircraft down. He was awarded the DFC. The aircraft returned safely to RAF Carnaby without further injury. |
