Reason for Loss | Raked by light flak on the starboard side, hitting the flight engineer in the head, body and legs and also badly injuring the wireless operator, Sgt Eddie Durrans. The flak came from a train. Sgt Waller was given a morphine shot but still offered advice to the rest of the crew on the aircraft's controls, even though he was well aware that he probably wouldn't survive the journey. Durrans refused morphine and returned to his station, stating that he thought the morphine might impair his judgement. As soon as the aircraft reached the coast a distress signal was sent. On re-gaining the English coast, a flare path was spotted and the aircraft landed after the undercarriage had to be lowered manually due to earlier damage. The undercarriage collapsed on landing but the aircraft was brought safely to a stop without further injury. Sadly, Charlie Waller died during the night despite numerous blood transfusions. Durrans was awarded the CGM. |
