Reason for Loss | whilst still 40 minutes from the target, the aircraft was hit by flak, severely injuring the flight engineer. The outboard starboard engine was rendered u/s, the electrical system damaged. The pilot and wireless operator were also injured. Undeterred, the pilot decided to press on and drop his bomb load, which needed to be done manually as the electrical release solenoids were not functioning. The aircraft made a safe return to England and landed at Thorney Island where the flight engineer died shortly afterwards. |
