Reason for Loss | Aircraft took off from Ludford Magna at 2205 hrs tasked with ABC duties for the Nurnberg raid. Lancaster crashed on return at R.A.F. Welford, Berkshire. Having not responded to any of the air traffic controller's radio calls, the order was given to turn off the runway lights and in the darkness, the Lancaster misjudged its landing. Examination of the wreckage revealed that the aircraft had been badly shot up and may have been unable to respond to the radio calls. |
