Reason for Loss | Banbury Advertiser June 25th 1941: "DEATH OF R.A.F. MAN IN CLIFTON MILL POOL. Evidence that a young aircraftman seemed to "slide" down into the water was given at the inquest on Monday on the airman whose body was recovered from a spot in Clifton Mill Pool known as "Deep Hole" on Sunday evening. He was Leading Aircraftman Stanley Taylor Livingstone, aged twenty-one, of the R.A.F., who was stated to be a native of Dundee. Corporal Bernard W. Blunden..said he, Livingstone, and several others went bathing in the pool at Clifton Mill, Doddington, about 5 p.m. Witness said that after splashing about Livingstone swam out to the centre of the pool and back again. He swam out again and turned to face the bank, treading water. Witness said he saw Livingstone duck his head in the water and witness asked him if he was O.K. ans Livingstone relied "Yes." A little later Livingstone appeared to slide down into the water and bubbles appeared. He had been in the water about two minutes. Blunden said he and the other bathers dived for twenty minutes without success. P.S. Petrie, of Doddington, said with assistance he recovered Livingstone's body from the water about 8 p.m. Flying Officer James Walter Harper, a medical officer in the R.A.F..stated "there was no water in the lungs and there were no usual signs of death from drowning." The Coroner adjourned the inquest until Tuesday night to hear further medical evidence..a further post-mortem examination had revealed that death was due to asphyxia following an attack of syncope. The Coroner recorded a verdict of "death from natural causes." |
