Miscellaneous Information
Harold was born on 20 November 1920 at Wynyard, Saskatchewan. His father, who was deceased by the time of Harold's enlistment, was born at Mountain, USA and his mother was born in Iceland and was also deceased. He had a sister Anna Beatrice and a brother Valdimar, as well as a twin brother J/17276 F/L Johann Walter Einarson DFC DFM (known as Wally). Sadly Johann was also to lose his life on 25 February 1944 from 61 Squadron (Augsburg attack) -see http://losses.internationalbcc.co.uk/loss/106968 The schools he attended were Elfros Public 1926-1930, Wynyard Publc 1930-1934 and Winnipeg High School 1934-1938. These were followed by University of Saskatchewan 1938-1940, and Robertsons Secretarial School in 1940 (Stenography). Harold enjoyed playing hockey, basketball, and swimming and liked hunting, fishing and camping. In 1939 he helped In a garage and then enlisted on 10 February 1941. |
After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 4 October 1941, arriving at 3 PRC on 21 October.He then proceeded to 19 OTU on 25 November 1941, 1654 CU 23 July 1942 and 207 Squadron on 4 September 1942. Sadly Harold was to lose his life the following week on 10 September 1942 on a mine laying operation. |

Reason for Loss | Believed to have been shot down by a night fighter into North Sea, 10km SW of Thyboron, Denmark. Probably by Uffz. Fritz Hobbusch (7./NJG2) who claimed a, misidentified, Stirling at this place and time. The Lancaster crew returned fire and managed to shoot down the attacking Dornier 217 J-1, WNr 1286, from which the crew of 4 escaped. |
